Stress Kills!

Earlier this year one of my professors said something in class that has stuck with me ever since. She said that people usually find psychology because they are trying to understand themselves. We usually are trying to understand a problem that we've defined in our own lives rather than something that we specifically see or want to understand about others. This statement was an "Ah ha" moment for me, as Oprah would say. I really began to reflect on if this was true for me and it definitely was. My interest in psychology was very personal. I didn't grow up in what would be considered a normal family structure and growing up it led to some internal struggles for myself that I eventually had to learn to come to terms with and become aware of and face as best I could. I'm specifically interested in stress and anxiety disorders. I am really interested in the effects on children. Growing up I felt alone in trying to understand the areas of my childhood that I didn...

Friends Forever!

Image
Life is strange.... it's weird how someone you've not seen for a long time can make such an impact. There are certain friends that it doesn't matter how much space and time comes between you, you'll always be friends. As kids I remember we'd always say friends forever. We had no idea what that meant, but as an adult you realize that some of those same friends truly are your friends forever! There are friendships that nothing seems to come between. Talei Jones is one of those friends. Talei and I went to school together from we were very young up until I left for boarding school in middle school. She was always very unique. She was mixed to start, her mom is from Fiji with very dark skin and her dad is white. As you can imagine Talei had this beautiful brown skin and a very warming smile. She spoke French. She was insanely smart, but never in a condescending or malicious way. She just oozed intelligence but always a gracious person. Everyone liked her. To this day ...

Dr. Strachan?

Everyone knows that I'm moving to Tel Aviv to get my Master's degree. I was speaking to my ailing grandmother recently and she said to me that I need to get my Doctorate. I kinda laughed it off, because I really wasn't thinking that far ahead as yet. My grandmother has been battling Breast Cancer for over a year now and she was re-admitted to the hospital last week. I went to visit her this weekend and the 1st day she didn't look well and she was incoherent. Yesterday I went to visit her again and we spoke. She looked a bit better and was very happy to see me. Somewhere along the way the topic came up again and she said I needed to pursue my Doctorate. Again I just sort of brushed it off. Somewhere between leaving the hospital and this morning I think my grandmother may be on to something. As I drove around the Island yesterday and in speaking to my sister in law a bit about the education system here and some other major issues children are exposed to I really began...

Beach Bum

Image
Since arriving home I have been to the beach more days than not. I'm becoming quite the beach bum it seems, though I'm ok with this. I ran out of swimsuits last week and had to unpack some more. LOL I haven't worn the same suit twice yet so clearly I've not really done enough beaching yet! :-) I think everyone would agree with me...with beaches like this, it's hard to resist going everyday! Axel has been to the beach with me several times now and he's thoroughly enjoying it so much. He's such a water baby! I think Island Life suits him just fine! My friend from middle school came to visit over the past 5 days and we made sure to swim everyday. He'd not been back to the Bahamas in 10+ years so I think he thoroughly enjoyed the beaches! We didn't even let the rain, and bad weather stop us even though the hotel closed the beach. How does one close a beach you might ask? I was wondering the same thing! Beaches are God's gift to us all you...

Shalom ATL

Leading up to my last day in Atlanta was quite stressful. Moving and filtering through 9 years of one's life takes lots of effort and time. I did make it a point to have some fun though. I enjoyed my time as much as possible and got to visit some of my favorite restaurants in the city as well as do somethings I'd always been meaning to do. Last night out with the homie Lisa at Havana Trying to get rid of my furniture proved difficult. I gave a substantial amount of my belongings to my local Goodwill. I tried selling my furniture on Craigslist, but I wasn't lucky. We all get by with a little help from our friends though and I am certainly no exception. My friends have saved my sanity in the last few days of my moved for sure. My dining room set ended up being bought by one of my friends from the dog park the day before I moved. Thanks Sheila for the clutch save! :) And my friend Lisha offered to take the remaining items to her house and sell at her garage sale! She...
