Stress Kills!

Earlier this year one of my professors said something in class that has stuck with me ever since. She said that people usually find psychology because they are trying to understand themselves. We usually are trying to understand a problem that we've defined in our own lives rather than something that we specifically see or want to understand about others. This statement was an "Ah ha" moment for me, as Oprah would say. I really began to reflect on if this was true for me and it definitely was.

My interest in psychology was very personal. I didn't grow up in what would be considered a normal family structure and growing up it led to some internal struggles for myself that I eventually had to learn to come to terms with and become aware of and face as best I could. I'm specifically interested in stress and anxiety disorders. I am really interested in the effects on children.

Growing up I felt alone in trying to understand the areas of my childhood that I didn't feel were normal. I knew they weren't but I didn't feel I had anyone to explain it to me or help me understand my feelings about the way I grew up. Most of my understanding came on my own and a lot of clarity came recently in my adulthood. I guess this is why I want to help children dealing with issues that may cause stress or anxiety. I want to be that person to help them, someone they can talk to.

Someone asked me today if my new career path was something that I thought I'd be able to support myself with financially. I began to ponder this. The longer I'm at home and observing and reflecting the more I realize where my interest in coping with stress and anxiety comes from and how important my future Master's degree is. My MA specializing in coping with stress, crisis and trauma is very relevant. STRESS KILLS PEOPLE!

I know this first hand. I worked in a high stress environment for 4 years and began to realize the toll that stress was beginning to take on my body and my emotional and physical health. Accountants have a high rate of alcoholism, suicide and heart disease. Like I said before stress kills. No Bueno to say the least. Also the longer I am home I realize how often I am in a stressful environment. Taking out your stress on others is not an effective tool to dealing with stress.

Life is becoming increasingly more stressful, however people are less equipped to deal with this stress. Inappropriately dealing with stress only makes the stress compound. I'd say my new career path is very relevant and imperative for the emotional and mental health of many.

Remember it's important to know and understand yourself and stress kills!
